This is from an older activation I did at K-5493 (Franklin-Marion State Forest), and I honestly can’t remember when it was. I’ve activated this park several times, as it is one of my favorite places to camp. This bluff looks out over a valley, and the town of Kimball, TN is at the end. With my telescope, I am almost able to read the gas prices at the Wal-Mart gas station sign.
My little old Nissan pickup is named Fred, and it only has 2-wheel drive. I always get curious looks from folks enjoying the forest on their ATV’s and side-by-sides. I always just laugh and say, “It ain’t what you drive, it’s how you drive it.” On this trip, a whole group of folks stopped by to see what was going on, and I got to show them a little about how POTA works, as well as letting them take in the views through the telescope. Some of them stopped back by after dark to check out the moon. I was even able to make a 67 mile contact on 2 meters during this activation with another ham doing a SOTA activation across the state line in GA!
